We are recruiting for a General Manager to work for our client who are an established business in the rolling stock refurbishment and maintenance sector based in Swansea. The role is to act as a senior leader responsible for the operational, commercial, and safety performance of the depot, reporting to the directors. The role will be responsible for planning, coordinating and executing production activities to deliver rolling stock services safely, on time, to specification and within agreed budgets.

This role requires strong leadership, excellent organisational skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and customers.

 

ABOUT THE ROLE:

  • Operational Leadership: Directing the operational requirements at the site including train movements and ensuring compliance with safety standards. Develop and monitor operational performance and drive continuous improvement at the site.
  • Safety & Compliance: Leading Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) activities, risk management, and ensuring compliance with railway legislation.
  • Commercial / P&L Responsibility: Managing budgets, profit and loss (P&L) for projects, and identifying opportunities for business growth.
  • Stakeholder Management: Building relationships with customers, partners, and internal functions.
  • Team Management: Leading multidisciplinary teams, managing performance, developing staff, and overseeing staff scheduling.
  • Strategic Planning: Driving operational readiness for new projects, implementing change management, and improving operational efficiency. Monitor the production processes and adjust schedules as needed.
  • Vendor Management: Managing supplier relationships and ensuring equipment maintenance.

 

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Extensive experience at a senior management level in the heavy rail / rolling stock industry.
  • Strong commercial acumen with experience managing complex contracts.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills to inspire staff and manage stakeholders.
  • Relevant engineering or business management qualifications. 
  • Experience in managing sites, depots, workshops or similar environments.
