Service Engineer – Rail Vehicles & Equipment

Role Overview

Carry out planned and reactive maintenance on specialist rail vehicles and associated equipment. Diagnose and repair faults across mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems. Support day-to-day operational availability through effective maintenance activities. Participate in an on-call rota and provide technical support outside normal working hours where required. Work across depots, operational environments, and outdoor locations in all weather conditions.


Key Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance activities in line with approved procedures, safety standards, and engineering best practice
  • Fault-find and repair diesel, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electro-mechanical systems
  • Undertake preventative maintenance to reduce repeat faults and improve reliability
  • Accurately record all maintenance activities, defects, and repair actions
  • Develop strong technical knowledge of equipment and systems and share knowledge with colleagues
  • Support and guide new or temporary team members where required
  • Undertake other reasonable duties within personal competency

On-Call & Travel

  • Participate in a rotational on-call / standby rota
  • Occasional UK travel to support fault finding and repairs

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Comply with all safety legislation, risk assessments, and safe systems of work
  • Maintain required medical, safety, and competence standards within a rail environment

Skills, Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in an engineering discipline
  • Proven experience in maintenance or service engineering
  • Multi-disciplinary skills across mechanical, electrical, and/or hydraulic systems
  • Full UK Driving Licence

Desirable

  • Apprentice-trained background
  • Experience in rail, heavy plant, fleet maintenance, or similar environments
  • Track safety certification (or willingness to obtain)
